The 3 Most important Rules to Follow in Skincare!

Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated - just remember these 3 important rules and you’ll be on your way to your best skin yet!

1. Patch test new skincare products!

Especially if you have sensitive or problematic skin (breakout prone, redness prone, etc). We like to pick a space on your skin that is usually clear and smooth and test the new product there. For example, you could choose the lower jaw area of your left side of your face as your area and apply your new toner there. Proceed with your skincare routine as usual and take notice of any signs of trouble or improvement there before you fully incorporate it into your routine. If you’re apprehensive about testing on your face, you can test on your neck or the inside of your arm.

2. Don’t over-exfoliate!

If you have sensitive skin or are afraid that you'll go overboard with exfoliating, we recommend starting at a lower dose! Exfoliators help lift away the dead skin cells on the surface of our skin, leaving us with a fresh, smooth glow. However, if you overdo the exfoliators, your skin will be left red, sensitive, and broken. The product has eaten away at the living skin layer and has now weakened your skin’s barrier to the outside world of pollutants and irritants.  Once you’ve over-exfoliated, it’s definitely possible to return to your healthy skin, but this takes time, patience, and being super gentle and minimal with your skincare! For some of us, it’s quite easy to overdo the exfoliation, so a general rule of thumb is to exfoliate 2-3 times a week at most, or when you feel you skin is looking duller or more congested than usual.

3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Any watery products with hyaluronic acid is perfect for non-irritating, non-sticky moisture. Pictured here is our Neogence Hydrating Spray with hyaluronic acid, perfect for spraying on after washing your face to restore moisture. Photo credit - Neogence

Well-hydrated skin is not just everyone’s #skingoals - it prevent skin problems like breakouts, oil, and wrinkles! For example, in Taiwan, we believe that oily skin is just a symptom of unbalanced, overly dry skin that is producing oil in an effort to rebalance itself. Moisturized skin also prevents signs of premature aging and fine lines by plumping up the skin cells for a fuller look. Remember, when we say “moisturize,” we mean a watery product like a toner, lotion, or sheet mask. Think of it this way - the air is constantly pulling moisture from your skin, and when you wash your face, you can strip your skin of its moisture, so you must re-hydrate with watery skincare!
